Jamey Gold's Historic Win at the 2006 World Series of Poker

The 2006 World Series of Poker (WSOP) was a pivotal moment in poker history, marked by Jamey Gold's record-breaking win in the Main Event, which attracted 8,773 participants. This event is often considered the peak of the poker boom.

Phil Hellmuth secured his tenth bracelet in a $1,000 rebuy tournament, while Daniel Negreanu made 46 rebuys but did not make it to the prize pool. The total prize pool exceeded $2 million due to 1,691 rebuys. In 2022, Scott Seiver made 43 re-entries in a single tournament, showcasing the evolving nature of poker tournaments.

Only two Russians, Sergey Feklisov and Vitaly Lunkin, made it to the prize pool in the main event. Kirill Gerasimov stood out with seven prize placements, the best result for a Russian player in the series. Notably, Gerasimov's third-place finish in a $5,000 Omaha Hi-Lo tournament was particularly impressive, as he finished behind Phil Ivey and Sam Farha.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
