Ilya Gorodecky: From Poker Pro to Casual Player

Ilya Gorodecky, a well-known figure in the poker community, recently shared his journey into the world of poker. His introduction to the game came through Nikolai Vlasov, an international chess master who introduced him to poker.

Gorodecky started playing poker around 2005 and had significant success by 2007, particularly in no-limit hold'em and omaha hi-lo. His maximum online poker tournament win was $19,000. However, his online poker career has seen a decline in recent years.

For the past six years, Gorodecky has not been actively playing online poker and now plays only occasionally in closed games. His transition from a top online player to a casual enthusiast reflects the changes in his lifestyle and priorities.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
