Illinois Moves to Strengthen Gambling Self-Exclusion Program

The Illinois Gaming Board is taking steps to enhance its gambling self-exclusion program. The regulatory board unanimously approved three proposed rule changes aimed at expanding self-exclusion enrollment options. These changes are designed to address problem gambling more effectively.

The current program in Illinois lacks several features available in other states, such as mail applications, a treatment-provider enrollment system, and an online enrollment structure. These limitations can deter individuals with gambling issues from participating. Marcus Fruchter, the IGB administrator, highlighted that research indicates shame, embarrassment, stigma, and procedural friction are significant barriers for those considering self-exclusion enrollment.

The proposed rules introduce sweeping changes to the program. Currently, Illinois residents can only self-exclude for five years or more. The new proposals add self-exclusion periods of six months, one year, and three years, while retaining the five-year option. Additionally, the state plans to expand enrollment pathways, including online and mail applications. Furthermore, the new proposal will include video gaming terminals and fantasy sports in the self-exclusion program.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
