Human vs. Machine: Poker Showdown at Rivers Casino

The Brains Vs. AI project, a long-term program at Carnegie Mellon University, has organized a historic poker match between a bot named Claudico and four professional players. The match will consist of 80,000 hands, with 20,000 hands against each player, and will take place from April 24 to May 7, 2015, at the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.

The bot, named Claudico, will play against Douglas "WCGRider" Polk, Dong "Donger Kim" Kim, Bjorn "asianflushie" Li, and Jason "cheet" Les. Each player will receive $100,000 regardless of the outcome, sponsored by Microsoft Research and Rivers Casino.

The game conditions are designed to minimize the element of chance, with mirroring hands and separate floors for players. The bot's strategy was developed by Professor Tuomas Sandholm and his graduate students Noam Brown and Sam Ganzfried. Douglas Polk expressed optimism about human capabilities, hoping to prolong the competition against computers. The match will be streamed live on Twitch.TV with open cards.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
