Gareth James' Method for Grouping Poker Flops to Optimize Strategies
Gareth James has developed a method for grouping poker flops to help players quickly determine optimal strategies. There are 19,600 possible flops, 1,755 of which are strategically different. James groups flops into 12 categories based on the cards involved.
James' method helps players think in ranges and global strategic categories, rather than focusing on the strength of individual hands. This approach allows players to quickly identify differences in strategy on different flop textures. The method involves grouping flops into categories such as 'Ace and two broadways,' 'Ace, broadway, and low card,' and 'two broadway cards.'
For example, on flops like ABB (Ace and two broadways), players should bet frequently with a large sizing due to high equity. On flops like ABx (Ace, broadway, and low card), players should mix large and small sizings. On flops with two broadway cards, players should bet frequently with mixed sizings, occasionally checking on specific boards. This method helps players quickly identify and correct common leaks in their game, such as infrequent continuation bets on the flop.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
