Exploiting TAG Fish: Strategies for Poker Players
The TAG (Tight-Aggressive) style was initially created for playing against fish. However, in today's poker landscape, identifying and exploiting TAG fish requires a more nuanced approach. TAG fish have six distinctive features: constant check-raises followed by folding, predictable play patterns, overestimation of potential odds, loose play from blinds and early positions, low tilt resistance, and uniform perception of all regulars.
To exploit TAG fish, players should look for patterns in their play. For example, if a TAG fish frequently check-raises on flops with an ace and then folds, you can exploit this by calling their check-raises and taking the pot on the turn. Additionally, punishing their predictability by varying your play can catch them off guard. Avoid paying off their draws, as they often overestimate their odds, and widen your 3-bet range to exploit their loose play from early positions and blinds.
If you find yourself playing like a TAG fish, it's important to recognize and adjust your strategy. Mix up your play to avoid predictability, be mindful of the dynamics at the table, and avoid overestimating your odds. By understanding and adapting to these strategies, you can improve your poker game and avoid falling into the TAG fish trap.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
