Evgeniy Kachalov Leads After Day 1 of Epic Poker League Tournament

The first tournament of the Epic Poker League began at the Palms hotel. The tournament had a buy-in of $20,000 and was played in a 6-max format. There were 137 participants out of 253 potential players, making it a very successful turnout.

The tournament had a unique structure, starting with blinds of 100-200 and increasing to 200-400 after 1.5 hours. This structure led to quick eliminations, with notable players like George Long and Allen Kessler being among the first to leave.

Evgeniy Kachalov ended the day with the most chips, 356,300. He secured his lead through a key hand against Carlos Morthensen, where he held a set of queens against Morthensen's Ace-Jack. Other notable players in the top three include Brian Rast with 260,500 chips and Ben Lamb, who automatically secured a spot in the top three.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
