Doug Polk Shares HU NL Poker Strategy Insights in New Interview
Doug Polk, a renowned poker player with three World Series of Poker bracelets, recently shared his insights on heads-up no-limit (HU NL) poker strategy in an interview. Polk, known for his accomplishments in heads-up play, discussed various aspects of the game, including optimal opening ranges, raise sizes, and adjustments for deeper stacks.
Polk and his long-time heads-up coach Fabien Adler recently released a new course called The End Boss System. This course, which took several months to record, compiles all the concepts they have learned over the years into an easily digestible format. The course aims to help players achieve a top-level understanding of HU NL poker, with a total duration of approximately 50 hours, including additional materials on deep-stack play.
One of the key topics discussed was the optimal opening range from the button in a 100 big blind stack. Polk advised that the optimal range is 84% of hands, including all pairs and all suited hands. He also recommended a raise size of 2.25 big blinds for this stack depth. When playing with deeper stacks, Polk suggested adjusting the raise size but keeping the range of starting hands largely the same. He noted that with deeper stacks, the 4-bet size can increase to three times the 3-bet size.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
