Daniel Negreanu's Controversial Tweets Spark Debate on Poker Player Types
Daniel Negreanu recently took to Twitter to discuss the state of poker and the characteristics of bad and good players. In his initial tweets, he listed traits of bad poker players, including being slow, quiet, stingy, and negative. He clarified that the term 'nit' refers to players who are cheap and selfish, not those who play tight.
Mike McDonald responded to Negreanu's tweet, questioning whether all winning players should be fast, loud, and generous. Negreanu later tweeted about the characteristics of good poker players, including being fast, friendly, and generous.
Journalist D-Kay Lapin criticized Negreanu's tweets, calling them arrogant and dogmatic. Douglas Polk praised Lapin's article, while Mike Gorodinsky expressed skepticism about the critique. Negreanu explained that 'nits' are players who love freebies, avoid paying for things, and refuse to gamble with negative EV. He clarified that he meant 'gruff' when he said 'quiet' and encouraged players to be friendly and not rude. Negreanu suggested that plus players should bring benefits to the poker community, such as buying beer for others.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
