Daniel Cates: The Poker Journey of a Legendary Player
Daniel Cates, a renowned online poker player, started his journey by playing with friends on PokerStars and initially used the nickname w00ki3z. He first played poker in school, making chips out of paper, and began playing for money at 17 in home games. Cates was nicknamed Jungleman due to his long hair and eccentric behavior.
Cates initially lost $5,000 but gradually regained his losses and increased his bankroll by 250% after winning a $25 tournament. He worked at McDonald's earning $7 an hour and saved $1,000, which he considered the hardest-earned money. He started his poker career with a significant loss but turned it around after a $25 tournament win, which motivated him to learn more.
Cates played online poker full-time at 18, earning around $100,000 by the end of the year. He began his poker career in 2007, rising to play $10/$20 stakes by 2008 and $100/$200 by 2009. Cates played 40-60 hours a week, 7 days a week, and had a win rate of 10BB/100 hands at his peak. He played against notable players like Phil Galfond, Patrick Antonius, and Sauce123.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
