Colin Moshman Shares Insights on Poker Bäcking: Tips and Tricks
Colin Moshman has been investing in poker players for the past eight years. In a recent article, he shares his experiences and insights on the intricacies of poker bäcking. Bäcking involves providing a player with a bankroll and sometimes additional services like lessons or strategic seminars. The profit split between the bäcker and the player has shifted from 50/50 to more favorable terms for the player, such as 60/40 or 70/30.
The return on investment (ROI) for bäcking has decreased over the years due to increased competition and more players seeking backing. Moshman notes that the ROI has dropped significantly since before the Black Friday incident, where a $25,000 investment could yield around $50,000 annually. Now, a similar investment might only return about $15,000.
Bäcking requires more active involvement compared to passive investments like stock purchases. Moshman explains that while the ROI might seem high, the time and effort involved in managing the backed players can make it less appealing. He advises looking for candidates who demonstrate strong results, professionalism, and a realistic view of their advantages. Contracts with backed players should clearly outline obligations and responsibilities to avoid future disputes.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
