Chip Reese: Legendary Poker Player Shares His Journey and Insights

Chip Reese, a legendary poker player, has made a significant mark in the poker world with 3 bracelet wins and 21 cashes in the World Series of Poker. His last bracelet victory came in the 2006 HORSE Championship for $50k, an event extensively covered by ESPN.

Reese was one of the eight top players invited to the first season of Poker Superstars, a show featuring some of the strongest players of the time. The unique format of the first season included high buy-ins and a mysterious prize distribution. The eight players—Chip Reese, Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, Phil Ivey, Gus Hansen, T.J. Cloutier, Howard Lederer, and Barry Greenstein—each contributed $400,000. The prize distribution was unusual, with Gus Hansen winning $1,000,000 and the remaining $2,200,000 distributed in a way that left some details unclear. Phil Ivey, who finished third, later revealed that he got his $400,000 buy-in back.

Reese's journey in poker began at the age of 5 when he started playing with baseball cards. His mother intervened when he won all the baseball cards from his classmates, marking the beginning of his poker career. Reese believes that learning to lose is crucial for staying a top poker player. He recalls his early days in Vegas, where he often lost all his money because he didn't know when to stop. He also emphasizes the importance of enduring tough times, noting that many promising players lose their skills and bankrolls during periods of bad luck.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
