Bob Vulgaris: The NBA Betting Prodigy Who Lost His Edge

Bob Vulgaris was one of the most successful sports bettors in the world, focusing on NBA. He started betting on sports in the late 1990s and made a fortune within five years. He could bet up to a million dollars a day during the regular NBA season with 70% accuracy.

Vulgaris identified a pattern in how bookmakers set totals for the first half of NBA games. He noticed that the fourth quarter often had more scoring due to fouls, free throws, and fast breaks. This pattern allowed him to make significant profits, especially when combined with his ability to predict the actions of coaches like Eddie Jordan, Jerry Sloan, and Byron Scott.

However, Vulgaris lost a significant portion of his bankroll in the 2003-2004 season due to changes in bookmaking practices. He had to adapt to the digital revolution in sports betting, which involved using computer models. Modern sports bettors use advanced statistical methods and algorithms to gain an edge. Bookmakers also use complex mathematical models to set their lines, making it increasingly difficult for bettors to maintain a consistent advantage.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
