Archie Karas: The Greek Gambler Who Turned $50 into Millions and Lost It All

Archie Karas, born on November 1, 1950, in Antypata, Cephalonia, Greece, is a name synonymous with high-stakes gambling and extraordinary luck. Known as 'The Greek,' Karas's journey from poverty to becoming a millionaire and back is a tale of remarkable highs and devastating lows.

Karas arrived in Las Vegas in December 1992 with just $50 in his pocket. His winning streak, which lasted for two and a half years, is still seen as a benchmark for extraordinary success in high stakes gambling. During this period, Karas accumulated over $40 million through his exceptional skills in poker, craps, pool, and other forms of gambling.

However, Karas' fortune took a dramatic turn. In less than a month, he lost most of his winnings. He lost $11 million in craps, $2 million against Chip Reese, and a staggering $17 million in baccarat, bringing his total losses to $30 million. This left him with an estimated $12 million, a mere fraction of his peak wealth. Despite his incredible rise and fall, Archie Karas' story remains one of the most fascinating in the world of high-stakes gambling.
