Apestyles: The Poker Pro Who Battled Addiction and Won $16 Million
Jonathan Van Fleet, known online as Apestyles, has been a professional poker player for two decades, primarily focusing on tournament poker. Apestyles won a $20 tournament and quickly increased his winnings to $70,000. However, his career took a tumultuous turn after Black Friday in 2011, which led to a depressive period where he moved from country to country.
Apestyles' struggles extended to his personal life, particularly in Cabo San Lucas, where he battled with drink and drugs, notably adderall. This period was so severe that his friends had to take away his computer to ensure he was coherent. Despite these challenges, Apestyles managed to turn his life around, emerging from rehab and reassessing his priorities. He then went on a winning streak that significantly impacted his performance at the poker table.
In his career, Apestyles has achieved remarkable success, winning 29 six-figure scores, with 14 of those in 2019 alone. He has also co-founded BBZ Poker, a popular poker coaching company, and streams on Twitch, providing high-value content to the poker community.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
