Amit Mahiya Shares Insights on Playing Poker with a Short Stack

Amit Mahiya, known as amak316 in online poker, is one of the most consistent players in the last three years with winnings exceeding $2.4 million. He is part of the Brunson 10 team, representing the poker room DoylesRoom.

The Brunson 10 team currently includes six players: Chris "Moorman1" Moorman, Dani "Ansky" Stern, and Alex "AJKHoosier1" Kambeiris. Mahiya shares his insights on playing poker with a short stack, a common challenge in tournaments.

Mahiya prefers to have at least 15BB to consider folding against a player who opened the bank with a raise of 2.5-3.5BB. He advises going all-in with hands like small pairs, broadway hands, or suited connectors when facing a wide range of opponents' hands. Against tighter players who often fold to 3-bets, it is rarely a mistake to polarize the range because they usually do not think about such categories.

Players who qualify through satellites often play too tightly because the game is too expensive for them, making them good targets for all-ins. With a small stack, it is often profitable to open with an all-in, but it is difficult to open with a raise with small pairs, suited QJ, or weak suited aces even from late positions. Many good players now go all-in with such hands even with 20BB to balance their range against good players.

The biggest mistake players make with a short stack is opening too often with a raise and calling too tightly. Mahiya's strategies provide valuable insights for poker players looking to improve their game with a short stack.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
