Alex Fitzgerald's Top Three Poker Mistakes to Avoid
Professional poker player Alex Fitzgerald has identified three common mistakes that players often make at the poker table. These mistakes, if left unchecked, can significantly impact your poker results. Fitzgerald advises against limping preflop unless there is a very good reason. He explains that limping preflop can signal to opponents that you have a mediocre hand, as you would likely raise with stronger hands like aces, kings, queens, or jacks.
Fitzgerald also warns against donk leading into the flop with mediocre pairs. He suggests that checking with mediocre pairs and folding to significant aggression is a better strategy. Donk leading with small pairs can make your hand an easy target for opponents to attack. Fitzgerald recommends only donk leading with hands like sets or draws, which have equity and can continue bluffing on later streets.
Another costly mistake Fitzgerald points out is moving all in just because you want the pot now. This can help your opponent play perfectly, as they may call with better hands or draws. Fitzgerald advises taking these situations slowly and not forcing the hand just because the pot is already big. He emphasizes the importance of learning how to play hands like A-K when they miss the flop.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
