The 1981 World Series of Poker: A Family Business, Golden Watches, and Calligraphy
The 1981 World Series of Poker (WSOP) was a landmark event in the history of poker, marked by significant wins and unique management. Stu Ungar won two bracelets at the WSOP, including the main event, earning $375,000. The 1981 WSOP was managed by the Binion family, with key roles played by Benni Binion, his wife Teddy Jane, and their sons Teddy and Jack.
The series was known for its strict poker-only format, with no additional Vegas-style entertainment. This approach was part of the strategy to promote Binion's Horseshoe as a reputable family business. The tournament featured a calligraphic style of record-keeping, which was a distinctive feature of the early WSOP events.
Ruth Godfrey won the 1981 WSOP Ladies Event, earning $17,600. The Ladies Event was in its fifth year and featured a seven-card stud high format. The 1982 WSOP featured 14 tournaments, with a total of 1,253 participants. This increase in the number of tournaments and participants highlighted the growing popularity of the WSOP.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
