WSOP 2012: Obann Casals and John Monnett Win Big in Key Tournaments
Two standout tournaments from the 2012 World Series of Poker (WSOP) saw impressive victories by Obann Casals and John Monnett. The first tournament, №6, was a No-Limit Hold'em 9/6/2-max event with a buy-in of $5,000 and 409 participants. The prize pool for this tournament was $1,922,300.
The first prize for Tournament №6 was $480,564, won by Obann Casals. The tournament featured a unique format where players started on long tables, moved to short tables, and finished with head-to-head play. Casals, a 21-year-old French player, showcased his skills by defeating Joseph Cheong in the final head-to-head match. Casals' victory was particularly notable given his recent move to Malta for online poker and his previous successes in the FTOPS tournaments.
Tournament №10 was a Stud Hi event with a buy-in of $5,000 and 145 participants, featuring a prize pool of $681,500. John Monnett, a 30-year-old professional from California, emerged victorious with a first prize of $190,826. Monnett's win was significant as he is known for his prowess in mixed games, having previously won a bracelet in an 8-game event and reaching the head-to-head stage in a 2-7 Lowball tournament.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
