Poker Pros Losing Big: US Law Enforcement Seizing Cash
US law enforcement officials have been seizing cash from traveling poker professionals due to civil forfeiture laws. These laws allow authorities to confiscate money without charging the owner, leaving them with a lengthy legal process to retrieve their property.
Ari Engel, a professional poker player, was pulled aside at Asheville Airport for additional screening because he had over $10,000 cash on him. He was forced to prove via tax forms where his cash came from, highlighting the potential risks for poker professionals who frequently travel with large sums of money.
Daniel Negreanu, another well-known poker player, shared an experience where he was removed from his seat on a plane and surrounded by 16 officers. This incident occurred even after he had declared his cash and been searched by police, demonstrating the intrusive nature of these seizures.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
