Major Sports Leagues Call for Tougher Penalties Against Harassing Gamblers

The NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and MLS, along with their players’ associations, have called for stricter measures against people who harass athletes. The leagues have sent a letter to gambling regulators in 35 states and the District of Columbia, insisting on a lifetime ban for people threatening professional or amateur athletes, as well as associated staff.

The letter highlights the increasing threats and insults heaped on pro players, often originating from bets that have not gone as planned. Angered bettors frequently see the athletes as responsible for their misfortune. The leagues describe the situation as unacceptable and urge state gambling regulators to act.

Some states, including Massachusetts, Ohio, West Virginia, Louisiana, and Wyoming, have already passed laws to address harassment and threats from sports bettors. These laws are designed to go after hecklers and online abusers driven by their fury over a losing wager.
