Raúl Shares Insights on Playing Poker at the WSOP vs. European Tournaments
Raúl, a seasoned poker player, recently shared his experiences playing at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) and compared it to European tournaments. In 2009, Raúl was part of a group of players from Valencia who participated in the WSOP Main Event. He recalled the sheer scale of the event, with around 3,000 participants on the first day, which is significantly more than a typical European Poker Tour (EPT) event.
The WSOP Main Event features a unique structure with two-hour levels and gradual blind increases, making it a deep tournament. Raúl noted that the atmosphere at the WSOP is more family-oriented and social compared to European tournaments. The event attracts a wide range of players, including families and retirees who play it as an annual vacation activity.
Raúl mentioned that the WSOP Main Event has a softer field compared to the EPT Grand Final, with many players participating through live satellites. The WSOP Main Event's bubble is small in theoretical terms but creates a highly profitable environment due to players' eagerness to cash out. Raúl observed that good players in the WSOP tend to play loosely and overvalue their position, often calling raises with weak hands like T4o.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
