Maximizing EV in Poker: Strategies Against Different Opponent Types

The author transitioned from Euro rooms to PokerBros and faced a small sample size of opponents, leading to the need for a solution. To address this, the author began researching different types of opponents and created criteria to categorize them. The four main types identified were super-passive fish, passive fish, aggressive players, and maniacs. Additionally, opponents were categorized based on their folding tendencies: medium-folding and over-folding.

The author identified that maniacs are the most common type of fish, characterized by ultra-aggressive play and high aggression on all streets. Maniacs are known for their frequent betting, often with smaller sizes, and their tendency to bluff frequently. The author noted that fish tend to call frequently, while regulars fold more often, requiring different strategies against each type.

The author analyzed a database of regulars in NL200+ and found that the proportions of different types of players were similar, indicating the need to bluff more often. The author discussed the importance of understanding the betting frequencies of maniacs, including their tendency to bet frequently but with smaller sizes. This knowledge can help players exploit maniacs more effectively and maximize their EV.
