Poker Stakes: Coefficients vs. Discounts — The Great Debate

The poker community is buzzing with a debate sparked by GetQuackedPoker and Tombos21 on Twitter. The discussion centers around the practice of selling stakes in poker tournaments and whether players should use coefficients or discounts.

GetQuackedPoker's Surprise

GetQuackedPoker expressed surprise that some players sell stakes with a coefficient, questioning the logic behind this practice. He pointed out that players with no significant achievements selling stakes with a coefficient in tournaments priced over $500 seems illogical.

Tombos21's Argument for Discounts

Tombos21 argued that players should sell stakes with a discount rather than a coefficient. He compared this to other financial areas where risk reduction is compensated with additional payment or benefit. Tombos21 believes that in poker, the risk of losing is high, and thus, stakes should be sold with a discount to account for this risk.

Community Reactions

Matt Berki responded that Tombos21's example is valid only for negative and zero players. He suggested that the risk in each individual tournament is high, and buyers should be cautious when purchasing stakes with a coefficient. David ODB Baker criticized the idea of selling stakes with a coefficient, stating that players take on all the risks and expenses, making the conditions favorable for backers. Ian Simpson mentioned a discussion about selling stakes at 1.8 in the WSOP Main Event, noting that such a high coefficient is rare. Mustafa Kanit noted that buying stakes from players with a high ROI can be profitable, but the nature of poker means that players may not always realize their equity. Galen Hall discussed the complexity of evaluating EV in poker and the risks involved in buying stakes, suggesting that the distribution of profits between the backer and the player is more about insurance against errors in ROI estimation than about real EV distribution.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
