Poker Pros Imagine 1998 WSOP Strategies: What Would You Do?
Daniel Negreanu recently engaged his Twitter followers with a hypothetical scenario: what adjustments would they make to exploit mistakes if they could play in the 1998 World Series of Poker (WSOP)? The responses from various poker professionals provided a fascinating glimpse into the strategies and common errors of that era.
Jake Abdalla focused on key statistics like VPIP and 3bet%, while Barney Boatman humorously suggested bluffing all 2020 travelers who would hunt super-tight regulars of 1998. Niall Farrell took a different approach, advising betting the entire bankroll on Barney Boatman at 300 to 1 odds. Max Silver and Itaro Sigabinaci both mentioned specific hands to fold, with Silver advising throwing away AK on a preflop 3-bet and Sigabinaci suggesting folding kings on a 4-bet.
Kevin Rand proposed using overfolds and overbluffs to win a bracelet, while David Salituro advised folding if someone says 'You call, it's gonna be all over baby'. Tony Dunst mentioned playing only with sets, and George Medina suggested playing very passively and tightly on the preflop. Professor Poker advised check-pushing almost all rivers with blockers, and Matt Sperling suggested exploiting the unwillingness of players to respond aggressively to aggression. Stable Genius advised betting more with made hands to maximize drawing, and Cranky MJ suggested calling more on the preflop and reducing the standard raise from 4x to 2-2.5x.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
