Poker Prodigy: My 2007 Journey to the Caribbean Adventure
In early 2007, at just 19 years old, my options for live poker were limited to the Turningstone casino in upstate New York and the annual PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) tournament. The PCA, held at the Atlantis casino in Nassau, Bahamas, featured a $10,000 buy-in and attracted over a thousand players. The tournament's main event was a significant milestone in my poker career, despite my early exit.
One of my friends, John Ford, finished third in the PCA 2007 tournament, winning $550,000. As I held a 5% stake in his winnings, I received $27,500, my largest tournament payout at the time. This windfall sparked a period of aggressive play, leading to both significant wins and losses. In April 2007, I won $80,000, nearly matching my 2006 earnings in just one month. My confidence soared, and I began to believe in my poker prowess.
My father, despite having no interest in poker, became an unexpected ally. He would alert me to new players in the high-stakes lobby, helping me secure about 20% of my wins during that time. In June 2007, I won $138,000, a sum I considered unreal. However, my first significant downswing occurred in August 2007, when I lost over $100,000. This experience opened my eyes to the potential downsides of high-stakes poker. In February 2008, I received an offer from a group of investors led by a professional poker player known as doctor Fells, who wanted to back top HU players on high stakes.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
