Poker at Lower Stakes: A World of Insults and Silence
The world of online poker can be quite different depending on the stakes you're playing. At lower stakes, the author found that players often use the chat function to insult each other, creating a hostile environment. This is in stark contrast to higher stakes games and poker shows, where players tend to be more respectful and even share observations about each other's play.
To better understand this dynamic, the author conducted an experiment. He participated in several Sit & Go (SNG) tournaments with buy-ins ranging from $0.50 to $33. In each tournament, he greeted his opponents and wished them luck, hoping to elicit some form of response.
At the lowest stakes, the author did receive some responses, with opponents wishing him luck or simply saying hi. However, as the stakes increased, the responses dwindled. At one point, a player from Sweden responded to the author's greetings with insults, comparing him to the infamous Anders Behring Breivik. This incident highlighted the stark difference in behavior between players at different stakes.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
