Phil Galfond's Poker Journey: Training, Experiences, and Notable Hands
Phil Galfond's poker journey is filled with significant milestones and experiences. He started playing 5/10nl 6max on Party Poker and showed a win rate of 5BB/100. To improve his skills, Phil hired two trainers: Emil Patel and Tommy Angelo. Emil Patel helped him master preflop strategies, while Tommy Angelo focused on the mental aspects of poker, including game selection, emotional control, and ending sessions.
Phil spent a semester in Madison, where he continued to play poker and work at "Atlanta" while studying. His university studies no longer caused him minor inconveniences, and he upgraded his setup with two Dell monitors and hired a laundry service. This period also marked a significant change in his social life, as Carolina no longer considered him gay.
In the summer of 2006, Phil arrived in Vegas for his first World Series of Poker. He shared a house with notable poker players like Peter Jetten, Alan Sass, Max Greenwood, Andrew Robl, and Dan Quinn. This summer was pivotal for Phil, as he learned more about poker than in the entire previous year. The group constantly discussed poker, which accelerated their learning process. Phil also made significant strides in his poker career, occasionally playing in higher-stakes games and even winning $100k in a day on UB. One of his most memorable hands from that summer was against 10lbBASS, where he went all-in with KQs against KJo and lost. Despite the loss, Phil remained resilient and continued to grind.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
