North Carolina Hikes Sports Betting Tax, Introduces Prediction Market Levy
North Carolina has implemented significant changes to its gambling regulations, including a new 6% tax on prediction markets and an increased tax on sports betting. The state now recognizes prediction markets as legal entities, provided they secure a license from the Commodity Futures and Trading Commission (CFTC).
The sports betting tax has been raised from 18% to 23%, with the additional revenue earmarked to support state universities. This move is part of the new budget signed by Gov. Josh Stein on Tuesday.
Sports bettors in North Carolina will also be able to deduct losses on their tax forms, a provision that aims to make gambling more consumer-friendly.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
