Mike Matusow: Phil Hellmuth, Ivey, Negreanu, and I Made Poker What It Is Today
Mike Matusow recently made a bold claim about the impact of certain personalities on the poker world. He stated that without figures like Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, and himself, poker tournaments as we know them today would not exist.
Defending Showmanship
Daniel Negreanu defended Phil Hellmuth's showmanship, asserting that it adds a unique flavor to the game. Negreanu mentioned that while some might find Hellmuth's antics obnoxious, they have undoubtedly contributed to the growth and popularity of poker. He also noted that these pros are richer, in part, because of Hellmuth's on and off-felt antics.
Criticism and Adjustments
Ike Haxton, however, criticized Phil Hellmuth's grand entrance, calling it a distraction. Haxton expressed that if the entrance is solely for content promotion, it could be done before play starts or during one of the breaks. WPT Host Tony Dunst mentioned that players at the World Championship series last year complained about the halftime show being too loud and long, leading to adjustments this year.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
