Liv Boeree's Poker Journey: From Astrophysics to Professional Poker

Liv Boeree, a former astrophysics student, found her way into the world of professional poker through an unexpected path. After participating in a TV game show that involved learning poker, Boeree fell in love with the game and decided to pursue it as a career. Her initial interest in poker was sparked by a show that taught participants how to play the game, and she quickly realized that her analytical skills from astrophysics could be applied to poker strategy.

Boeree believes that while luck plays a role in short-term poker games, skill and strategy are more important over longer periods. She explains that in a short game, luck can determine the outcome, but over a week of play, a skilled player will likely come out on top. This is because the more decisions players make, the more their skill and strategy will influence the outcome.

Boeree also discusses the evolution of poker from an intuitive game to a more mathematically driven one. She notes that the advent of online poker and data analysis has changed the game, making it more about strategy and less about intuition. She believes that the best poker player would be an artificial intelligence that excels at calculating Nash equilibrium, as it would be able to make optimal decisions based on mathematical probabilities.
