Mastering Stack Management in Limit Hold'em Tournaments

Ben Yu, known as Professor Ben on 2+2, is an American player who specializes in mixed games and is a convinced bankroll nit. The number L is a parameter for tournaments in limit games, representing the number of chips needed to play one full hand with single bets on all streets. In games with blinds, L corresponds to the preflop raise and bets on the flop, turn, and river, equaling 3.5 big blinds or 7 big blinds.

In stud games, L corresponds to the complete on the third street and bets on the fourth to seventh streets, equaling 4 big blinds or 24 to 48 antes, depending on the structure. A stack less than 0.5 L is considered the all-in zone, where the chances of winning a hand without a showdown approach zero. With a stack between 0.5 L and 1.5 L, players can still double up with a good hand but also risk being bluffed. A stack greater than 1.5 L is considered the normal play zone, where players can afford to make risky calls or bluffs.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
