Poker Pros Leon Sturm and Alexey Ponyakov Dissect Their Hands
Poker professionals Leon Sturm and Alexey Ponyakov recently sat down with Jonathan Jaffe to analyze their hands from a high-stakes tournament. The discussion provided insights into their strategic thinking and decision-making processes.
Leon Sturm opened with A3o from the second position in a Mystery Bounty tournament. He explained that as the tournament approached the money bubble, the value of high cards increased, making his raise with A3o a near-standard play. Sturm also mentioned that the nature of the Mystery Bounty tournament allowed for a bit more risk-taking to build a large stack.
Alexey Ponyakov called with K4o from the small blind, a move that Sturm considered somewhat borderline. Ponyakov, however, defended his call, stating that with a wide range of hands in front of him, calling was a reasonable play. Mauricio called with 22 from the small blind against a mini-raise, a decision that both players deemed acceptable given the circumstances.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
