Jesse Lonis Makes Massive Hero Call in High-Stakes Poker Tournament

Poker pro Jesse Lonis made a crucial hero call during a $100,000 buy-in event at the King Poker Cup high-roller series in Jeju, South Korea. Lonis faced a decision to either fold and assure a min-cash of $200,000 or risk a wrong read and walk away with nothing. The hand presented some stark decisions for the 2025 Card Player Player of the Year. He could simply fold to assure a min-cash of $200,000, or risk a wrong read and walk away with nothing.

Tony Lin applied three streets of maximum pressure on the direct money bubble. Lin raised 200,000 preflop from late position and Lonis called. The flop came down A♣5♣2♦ and Lonis checked. Lin bet 200,000 and Lonis called. The turn was the 8♦ and Lin put another 800,000 in the middle, with Lonis once again making the call. The river was the 4♦ and Lin moved all in, having Lonis covered. Lonis took a long time to consider the situation, using a few time extensions while he sized up Lin for a read on his opponent. He eventually called, showing A♦Q♥ for top pair to Lin’s bluff with Q♠9♥.

The pot gave Lonis a big stack, which he rode all the way to heads-up play against Bryn Kenney. The two would eventually work out a deal, with each player pocketing about $1.6 million. The score gave Lonis $33.6 million in live tournament winnings and his seventh seven-figure score of the last two years. Bryn Kenney is now up to $92 million in earnings, which puts him $12 million ahead of Stephen Chidwick for first place on the all-time money list.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
