Doyle Brunson's Wild Days: Poker on Fort Worth's Deadly Exchange Avenue

Doyle Brunson's autobiography, titled 'Krestnyy Ots Pokera', offers a gripping account of his life playing poker on Exchange Avenue in Fort Worth, Texas. The street, notorious in the 1950s, was a hub for criminals, including thieves, gangsters, pimps, drug dealers, murderers, swindlers, and con artists. Brunson's memoir provides a firsthand account of the dangerous and thrilling world he encountered.

Brunson met Wayne Hamilton and David Vernon, who grew up in the northern part of Fort Worth and were familiar with the local criminal underworld. The three young men played poker and billiards to make a living, unlike many of their opponents who had additional, often illegal, sources of income. Wayne and David's local connections helped Brunson navigate the dangerous environment, as they were accepted by the criminal community.

One of the most notorious figures on Exchange Avenue was Tinsy Eagleston, known for his violent behavior and involvement in the drug trade. His financial troubles, stemming from his drug habits, made him even more dangerous. Brunson and his friends had to deal with Eagleston's threats and aggressive behavior, which often involved violence and threats against their families. Despite the dangers, Brunson and his friends stood their ground, refusing to give in to Eagleston's demands. Their resolve and unity helped them avoid serious trouble, showcasing the tough and unyielding spirit of the poker players on Exchange Avenue.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
