California Grand Casino: The World's Oldest Poker Room
The California Grand Casino is the oldest poker room in the world. Located in Pacheco, California, it opened in the 1850s as the Woodford Hotel and Saloon. This was a time when the gambling landscape was much different, and the hotel and saloon acted as a place where gamblers could come to play and socialise. The Woodford Hotel and Saloon was located on the Wells Fargo Pony Express route, which was key to its growth.
In the late 70s, the Woodford Hotel and Saloon was renamed to the California Grand Casino after it was bought by Lamar Wilkinson, a famous poker player. In 2009, the casino moved across the road to its current location. To compete with online offerings, the casino is open 24/7 and contains a restaurant and dining area for all guests.
Despite competition from other casinos in San Francisco, such as the Lucky Chances Casino, Graton Resort & Casino, and Red Hawk Casino, the California Grand Casino continues to be a place where gamblers can enjoy themselves. Its rich history and continuous adaptation have allowed it to stay relevant in the ever-changing gambling industry.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
