Billionaire Predicts AI Will Kill Online Poker – Is He Right?
Chamath Palihapitiya, a billionaire, has made a bold prediction about the future of online poker. He believes that artificial intelligence (AI) will soon dominate the industry, leading to its decline. Palihapitiya stated that AI agents will eventually outperform human players, making the game unprofitable for ordinary participants.
Palihapitiya's prediction is based on the idea that AI agents will become so advanced that they will be able to 'shear the sheep' rather than 'skin them,' creating an illusion of fair play while consistently winning. He suggests that the online poker market, valued at $2.9 billion in 2020 and expected to reach $4.6 billion by 2027, will eventually collapse as AI agents take over.
However, not everyone agrees with Palihapitiya's dire outlook. Patrick Howard, a well-known professional, believes that while bots are a problem, they are not as detrimental as Palihapitiya suggests, especially in regulated environments. Howard points out that the risk of being caught and the subsequent penalties make it unprofitable for bot operators in well-secured rooms. Joe Ingram also stated that online poker is currently experiencing one of its best periods and that the market is unlikely to collapse to zero.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
