Billie Baxter Remembers Stu Ungar: The Legend's Final Days

Billie Baxter, in his 2023 article, recalls the final days of Stu Ungar, a poker legend. In 1997, Stu Ungar was 44 years old.

Stu Ungar first appeared in Las Vegas in the late 70s with a $60,000 debt to a mafia-connected bookmaker. He won the main tournament of the World Series of Poker in 1980 and 1981.

Stu Ungar's cocaine addiction cost him $1,200 a month. During the 1990 WSOP main event, Stu Ungar was found unconscious due to drug use. He was taken to the hospital, and despite his condition, he was still good enough to make it to the final table of the main tournament.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
