BGC Warns: Tax Hike Could Shut Down British Casinos, Threaten Jobs
The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has issued a stark warning about the potential impact of a proposed tax increase on machine games in Britain, stating that it could lead to widespread venue closures and job losses. The industry contributes significantly to the economy and employs thousands of people.
Grainne Hurst, BGC’s Chief Executive, described the tax hike as an "existential threat to casinos across Britain." She warned that if the Machine Games Duty increases to 40%, up to 3,800 jobs would be at risk. This would result in the closure of as much as one third of all shops and casinos by operators.
The BGC estimates that approximately 50% of all potential closures would be in the North of England and Scotland, directly putting up to 1,900 jobs at risk. The Midlands would sustain 20% of the closures while 10% of shops across London may close.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
