Analyzing Poker Tournament Structures with Excel
The author created an Excel spreadsheet to analyze tournament structures. The spreadsheet compares different tournament structures by calculating the percentage of chips lost from the initial stack. The author suggests that knowing the tournament structure helps players adapt their strategies, especially in the early levels.
The spreadsheet includes various columns such as 'SB' (small blind), 'BB' (big blind), 'Ante', 'Minutes' (level duration), 'Number of M', 'Jump M', 'Duration', 'Chips Lost', and '%'. These columns help players understand the dynamics of the tournament, including the rate at which blinds and antes increase and the cumulative time of the tournament.
For example, the author compares two tournaments: a regular sit-n-go on PokerStars $4.4 with 180 players and the weekly PokerStars $11 Sunday Million 1/4. Although the blind structures are identical, the initial stack sizes and level durations differ, affecting the overall dynamics of the tournaments.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
