Wyoming's New Law Threatens Bar Poker Games
A new law in Wyoming, aimed at curbing illegal gambling, could make friendly bar-style poker games illegal. The law, signed by Gov. Mark Gordon (R) on March 6, targets games played in bars and fraternal clubs, which often charge a fee along with selling food and drinks.
Senator John Kolb (R) stated that the law targets people running poker halls. The new law prohibits charging fees, taking a rake, or accepting tips for poker games. Additionally, games can’t be advertised, and businesses can’t charge any fees or rake for running the games, and dealers cannot accept tips.
The new law will have an immediate impact on businesses like The Bull Moose Saloon in Alpine, Wyoming. The venue, known as Yo’s Poker Palace, brings in a dozen or less players each week. Beyond poker, raffle-style games popular in Wyoming's bars are also now illegal under the new law.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
