Stake US Exits Illinois Online Poker Market by May 2026
Stake US has announced it will be leaving the Illinois online poker market effective May 19, 2026. This decision comes after the Illinois Gaming Board sent cease and desist letters to over 60 sweepstakes operators in February 2026. Stake US accounts in Illinois will be placed into redeem-only mode, allowing players to log in and redeem any outstanding balances but preventing them from joining games, making purchases, or participating in promotions.
Stake US has been proactive in complying with local regulations, having exited 19 states due to cease and desist orders and statewide bans. The operator continues to operate in 31 states, while competitors like Global Poker operate in 36 states, Clubs Poker in 39, and ClubWPT Gold in 44 markets.
Despite the exit of Stake US, other sweepstakes poker platforms like Global Poker and Clubs Poker may continue to operate in Illinois. Global Poker is expected to announce its exit date soon, while Clubs Poker might keep operating for the foreseeable future. ClubWPT Gold is exploring the viability of its new operating model and continues to operate in markets like California and New York, which have been abandoned by all competitors.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
