PokerStars' ZOOM Transition Sparks Debate Among Top Regulators
PokerStars announced that starting January 1, 2014, all $50/$100 NLHE and PLO tables would be replaced with ZOOM tables. This decision sparked a debate among top regulators, with some expressing optimism and others raising concerns.
Optimism and Support
Douglas 'WCGRider' Polk asked if the changes would affect $25/$50 and $100/$200 limits, to which PokerStars Nick replied that there were no such plans. Aaron 'Aejones' Jones expressed optimism about the future of ZOOM, predicting it would dominate all limits by 2015. Alexander 'AlexKP' Petersen supported the changes, stating that the current situation favors bots and scripters.
Concerns and Criticism
Trueteller questioned the future of 3-4-max games between regulators if ZOOM is implemented. Alex 'Kanu7' Millar expressed concern that ZOOM could reduce the action from regulators if the minimum buy-in is not high enough. Kanu7 and Lottenice/Sasuke stated that 3-6 max games between regulators are common at $50/$100 tables. Ben Sulsky expressed that ZOOM could bring back the times when skill was the primary factor in winning. Evan 'Two SHAE' Silverstein criticized the move, stating that it would benefit PokerStars more than the players.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
