PokerStars Turns 20: Legal Battles and Big Wins

PokerStars, the iconic online poker platform, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Founded in September 2001 by Rational Enterprises, owned by Isai Scheinberg and his family, PokerStars has become a household name in the poker world. The first account on PokerStars was created by Oscar Hornell from Sweden, known by the nickname pokermaniac.

To mark the occasion, PokerStars is hosting a series of tournaments called The Big 20 Rewind. Each tournament in the series is dedicated to a significant year in the platform's history. The series includes a $50 tournament with a $5 million guarantee and a three-day format, scheduled to start on December 5th. The winners of these tournaments will receive additional themed prizes, some of which are quite valuable. For example, the winner of the $1,050 tournament will receive a round-the-world trip.

However, the celebrations are not without challenges. An Austrian player recently won a court case against PokerStars, allowing other Austrian players to claim back their losses. The court ruled that PokerStars operated in Austria without a license from 2014 to 2019 and ordered the company to return €28,000 to the plaintiff. This ruling sets a precedent for other Austrian players to seek similar compensation. Additionally, Flutter Entertainment, the owner of PokerStars, lost a lawsuit in Kentucky and agreed to pay $300 million to the state. The lawsuit, which lasted for ten years, accused PokerStars of organizing illegal gambling activities. In other news, 888poker recently banned 85 accounts and compensated over 4,000 players with around $100,000. Meanwhile, Dan Bilzerian lost a Richard Mille watch worth between $950,000 and $1,000,000 during a boxing match in Las Vegas.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
