Poker Strategy: When to Call a Raise on the Small Blind
Calling a raise on the small blind is generally considered a weak move due to lack of position and favorable odds for the big blind. However, there are situations where calling a raise on the small blind can be advantageous.
One situation is when other options seem poor, such as when the stack is too large for a 3-bet push and the hand is too weak for a 3-bet call but too strong to fold. This often occurs in late tournament stages where avoiding unnecessary risk due to the Independent Chip Model (ICM) is crucial. For example, during the bubble of a final table with 10 players, an average stack of 30 big blinds, and holding the third stack with 32 big blinds, a tight-aggressive regular raises 2.2 big blinds from the hijack. With Ks Qs, calling is a viable option. Folding would be too tight, and 3-betting would be too loose. With a good chance to move up the payout ladder, calling allows for a strong post-flop play without risking a large stack.
Another situation is when there is a weak player on the big blind, and calling can lure them into the pot. This strategy is particularly effective against players who open wider than theoretical optimal play. For instance, if a tight player raises from the cutoff, and a weak player is on the big blind, calling with hands like As Js can be profitable. This approach allows for exploiting the weak player's tendency to call with a wider range, potentially winning a significant portion of their stack.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
