Poker Recognized as Sport in Russia Amid Casino Closures

In March 2007, poker was officially recognized as a sport in Russia. This recognition marked a significant shift in the perception of poker within the country, elevating it from a mere game of chance to a competitive and strategic activity.

Two years later, in July 2009, all casinos in Russia were closed by order of V. V. Putin. This closure was part of a broader effort to regulate gambling activities and reduce their negative social impacts.

Despite the closure of casinos, the recognition of poker as a sport allowed for the continuation of poker tournaments and events in specialized venues. This distinction ensured that poker enthusiasts could still engage in their favorite pastime legally and competitively.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
