Poker Protests: A Timeline of Player Revolts Against Poker Rooms

Poker players have a long history of protesting changes imposed by poker rooms. In mid-April, the GG Network leadership agreed to almost completely cancel the controversial rake reform after high-stakes players protested.

One of the earliest notable protests occurred in July 2010 when French players protested against PokerStars.FR. The room increased rake by 7.7% due to new tax legislation, leading to a sit-out protest by regular players. Although the preflop rake was removed, the overall rake increase remained.

In August and September 2011, players protested against partypoker's rake reform, which included increasing the maximum rake on certain limits. The protest involved players sitting out at tables with a zero average pot. Partypoker initially took a day to consider the changes but ultimately decided to cancel the rake increase.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
