Poker Dealers' Blunders: From Missing Chips to Incorrect Hands

Poker tournaments are notorious for the mistakes made by dealers, which can lead to significant disruptions and disputes. In 2023, Rob Koon found himself in a peculiar situation during a $600 buy-in tournament. During a big break, his chips mysteriously disappeared. Upon returning from dinner, Koon discovered that his seat was empty, and his chips were nowhere to be found. The situation was eventually resolved when it was revealed that another player had accidentally taken Koon's chips.

In another incident, a dealer accidentally took a player's cards and sent them to the muck during a late-night session. The player, who had been tight all night, suddenly made a large 4-bet. The dealer, on autopilot, took the player's cards and sent them to the muck, assuming the player was folding. The player was understandably upset, and a floor manager had to intervene.

Dealers' mistakes can also lead to confusion over the pot. In one instance, a dealer incorrectly handled a raise, leading to confusion and the need for a floor manager's intervention. The dealer suggested that the raise was $10 instead of $8, and simply opened the flop without resolving the issue. Players had to call a floor manager to sort out the situation. Another dealer dealt a sixth street card in a standard hand, causing confusion among players. The dealer realized the mistake only after the hand was over, but the other players remained oblivious to the error.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
