Poker Champion Arrested for Murder and Gang Crimes
Sofon Sek won the British Columbia Poker Championship on November 22, 2009, at the River Rock Casino in Richmond. The tournament, which attracted 679 participants, was a significant event in the poker community. Sek's victory was celebrated with a photo session, but he did not immediately claim his prize of 364,364 Canadian dollars.
Arrest and Allegations
The following day, Sofon Sek was arrested for his involvement in the murder of six people. The crime, known as the 'Surrey Six' murders, occurred on October 19, 2007, in a high-rise building in Surrey, British Columbia. The murders were linked to a conflict between two major gangs in the region: the Red Scorpions and the United Nations. The police investigation revealed that four of the victims were known criminals, while two were innocent bystanders.
Sek's winnings were frozen by the police, and a preliminary court hearing is scheduled for November 30, 2009, to determine his bail. The arrest highlights the darker side of the poker world, where players sometimes have criminal backgrounds.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
