Poker Pros Reveal: Why Cash Game Players Bet Better Than Tournament Players

Cash game players generally have a better understanding of betting sizes than tournament players. This is because cash game players are used to playing with deep stacks, according to Aejones.

In cash games, bets are usually built around the size of the pot. Bets larger than the pot are called "overbets," while bets within the pot size are considered normal. Aejones noted that tournament players often make large bets on one street hoping for a call, which is not an effective strategy.

Aejones advised that tournament players should use all streets to build the pot. He also mentioned that tournament players should focus on reading hands rather than just extracting value. Additionally, Aejones suggested that tournament players should consider the texture of the board when deciding on bet sizes.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
